Since moving to Southern California last spring, I've been refueling after workouts with fresh fruit smoothies. It's just what everyone here does. Although I'll always be a New Yorker at heart, I've swapped out my morning buttered bagel for a healthy dose of fruit and protein. My go-to smoothie after a hard workout is this refreshing blend of kiwi, avocado and cottage cheese. I recently started using lowfat Daisy brand cottage cheese in smoothies because it's packs 13 grams of protein into a half cup. And that's all-natural protein - no additives, supplements or preservatives.
What I really like about this smoothie is the consistency - it is creamy and mousse-like. This is a nice change from some of the more traditional icy cold smoothies, especially when refueling (with my feet up) after swimming outdoors on those chilly California mornings.
Left: Yes, that's a leg Selfie. Right: I'd buy Daisy Cottage Cheese based on the packaging alone. So cute!
Wait, there's one more thing! I can't write up a recipe using cottage cheese without mentioning that it happens to be one of my favorite foods. It's so versitile - you can have it sweet one day, savory the next, in salads, or my personal fav, straight out of the tub! It's kind of a perfect good-for-you snack.
