As we dial up our training in anticipation of racing season, we’ve noticed the one flaw in our favorite Pre-Workout Snack: Portability. Come spring, we squeeze in extra rides, swims and Pilates classes, so we don’t always make it home between training sessions.
I thought about layering the peanut butter, maple syrup, coconut oil, and chocolate chips into a teeny to-go container. But that seemed tedious and potentially messy. Browsing the chocolate section at the Whole Foods a few weeks ago, I found a perfectly portable solution: Justin’s organic dark chocolate peanut butter cups.
At first I wasn’t sure. The last time I’d indulged in peanut butter cups, they were Reese’s. On my home from a training camp in Tucson, my flight was delayed and by the time I got to my layover destination in Houston, all the airport eateries were closed. Dinner was a choice between Reese’s and a Milkway and so I went with the orange packet. They made a poor dinner. I was simultaneously still starving and slightly nauseas.
But the Justin’s label promised real peanut butter and fair trade dark chocolate, two of my favorite edible things, so I bought a few two-packs. The next day I ate one cup before my afternoon swim session and savedthe other cup so I’d have something to look forward to after.
We’ll pack a few peanut butter cups for on-the-go snacking when we travel to races this summer. Meanwhile, I’ve been nibbling these even when I have plenty of time to savor my pre-workout snack at home, alongside of hot cup of espresso.
