Pre-Workout Meal: Balsamic and Cheddar Bagel Sandwich

The Fixings: Toasted bagel, balsamic vinegar, fig butter or black currant jam, sharp cheddar, salt, and pepper

Why it Works: It’s filling, but easy on the stomach. When I have an evening workout or race, I need more substantial food than the bars, gels, and nut butter snacks on which I usually subsist between workouts.

The Pre-Workout Snack

Our current favorite power snack combines two heaping spoonfuls of peanut or almond butter, a small dollop of coconut oil, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a dusting of raisins or mini chocolate chips. About an hour before a workout, I’ll swirl all this into a ramekin and eat it off a spoon.

Charity Nut Butters

Chia Charger, creator of delicious, healthy energy bites, has added a new product to their mix:  Chia packed Nut Butters.  And, better yet, they are sending some of the proceeds to sponsored athlete chosen charities.

Check out this link for details:
Laurel's nut butter, Manhattan Mud, and is peanut almond butter blended with dark chocolate.
Bec's choice is peanut butter with agave nectar.  A portion of each order of Bec or Laurel's butter will be sent to their favorite charity, The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
The butters are vegan, dairy free, gluten free and don't contain any added oils.  So be healthy, order some butters and support a good cause!

Peach Basil Corn Muffins

There are peaches everywhere and the basil is blooming, so the Athlete's Food kitchen combined the two in these muffins. The muffin base is Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Corn Muffin Mix. Added to the mix were 3 peaches, a handful of chopped basil, a pour of maple syrup and a splash of vanilla. They were cooked in the convection oven at 325 for about 15-20 minutes and then served with real butter and creamed honey.
